Reducing the cost of your print

Have your Artwork ready!

 You can cut print costs if your files are ready to go, if you have your design in the right format, in a high enough resolution and with the correct bleed then you can eliminate design and touch up fees from the print process. 

• BLEED EXPLAINED - Bleed is simply an extended area around your design that gives the printer some margin for error when cutting the printed flyer or poster etc. If you want to print an A5 flyer, then your design needs to be setup 3mm larger on each side, with your artwork flowing or 'bleeding' beyond the standard A5 boundaries and covering the extra area. Bleed is best dealt with before your design has even begun, professional designers will be well aware of this but if you are doing your own design then set your bleed and guides up first thing. • Resolution Explained - Make sure your design is large enough for print! We are often sent files that are at screen resolution (72 dpi), as opposed to print resolution (300 dpi). Otherwise you may have to pay for your artwork to be redrawn larger. Have a look at the example on the right that gives an idea of how big your file needs to be.
• High volume, store and distribute over time - If your print has a message that isn't likely to change for some time, order a larger volume, store and distribute them in batches over a longer period.  
• Shop Around - Don't just accept the first price for print that you get, ask around. Printing is a competitive market in Milton Keynes so get a range of prices from a number of companies, but don't forget to check the quality!

Increase the impact and return from your print

• Simple, clear message. (not too  much text) - Try to minimise the amount of text and imagery on your print design, especially for flyers and posters. We often come across artwork that is just too busy, remember that you only have a second or two to grab the attention of the viewer, so for best results stick to a big, simple and clear message. Just get your essential point across in as few words as possible, then direct the viewer to a web address or phone number for more information.
• Targeted Delivery - It's good to get 10,000 flyers out to the people of Milton Keynes, but better (and cheaper) to get 1,000 flyers out to the RIGHT people. Think of your demographic, who your message or service appeals to, think about where they live or spend their time and where you are most likely to catch their eye and concentrate your print distribution to those areas.
• Repeat Your Print Runs -  Don't just do one print and delivery exercise per campaign. Leaflets, flyers and posters often yield the best returns the second and third time that they are delivered and distributed. It's about being there again and again in the viewers mind, they may see your message the first time, but not really look at it or register it mentally until it really knocks on their door.  
• Quality: ask for samples - Wherever you go to get your print, there is no need to compromise on quality. Ask for samples of their previous work and make sure that it meets your standard.
