This is satirical comedy at its best and performed by a truly talented group of singers and dancers. It also has to be the only show where I had to switch my mobile phone on rather than off, to be more involved with the performance. Why? Well believe it or not there is a real vote with all texts recorded, which means every night a different act can win. It is also a very clever piece of PR and advertising!
Audience participation is paramount, with flags being handed out and noisy hooters and clappers, being the menu for the evening. Even before entering the auditorium the energy in the foyer was electrifying.
In Les Dennis as Sergei and Mel Giedroyc as Boyka, the show had the perfect hosts. The humour was ambiguous, quick and extremely funny and executed with professionalism and aplomb. However the laughs were not just from the antic of the hosts; this was a clever satirical look at Eurovision and how each country performs; for example the Icelandic entry “Love Ballard #3A” was very much a skit on Bjork , whilst the Greek entry “Oh Aphrodite” was a beautiful send up of Nana Masskouri.
The show is full of energy, enthusiasm and top notch dancing and singing. It would be impossible and extremely unfair to single out any one performer of this show. It was a true ensemble of principals who collectively shone and looked as if they were enjoying themselves; and because they were having fun so did their appreciative audience.
This is a must see show. For 2 hours all every day worries are left far behind, and I defy anyone to leave the show without having an aching face or aching stomach muscles.
If you go to www.eurobeatthemusical.com you can see what people thought before during and after the performance. If these people cannot get you interested then nothing will. – Philip Shell
Monday night saw the opening of Eurobeat at Milton Keynes theatre. Not being a great lover of Eurovision I have to admit that I was not looking forward to the evening. How wrong I was.
